Make more access and opportunity for disabled workers a year-round priority
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which aims to promote a simple message to employers: Hire more people with disabilities. Many New York employers are doing just that, reaping the myriad benefits of adding dedicated and conscientious workers to their teams.
Yet we have an opportunity to do much more to accelerate the number of disabled New Yorkers developing meaningful careers. But it will require added political will and proactive government support to truly dismantle systemic barriers and overcome persistent biases that limit opportunities for too many people with disabilities.

U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres will on today at 10 a.m. award $800,000 in Community Project Funding to New York Sun Works, a local nonprofit dedicated to integrating the science of sustainability and climate education into K-12 urban schools. The funding, which Rep. Torres secured in the final Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023, will provide new, state-of-the-art hydroponic classrooms at 20 South Bronx public schools in order to teach science, sustainability, climate education, and nutrition while students grow hundreds of pounds of food to share with their families and communities. The event will take place in a classroom with hydroponics.
Good government group Citizens Union hosted its annual Gotham Greats Gala, honoring Deborah N. Dinallo, partner at Debevoise & Plimpton and former state Superintendent of Insurance; Edward Skyler, executive vice president for enterprise services and public affairs at CITI and former New York City deputy mayor for operations; and Elizabeth Velez, president of Velez Organization and MTA board member. The evening celebrated Citizens Union’s 125-plus years of promoting transparency, accountability, and ethics in New York’s City and State governments. The Gotham Greats Celebration raised $700k to support the non-profit's work on voting reform, civic engagement, and police accountability.
