Coalition fighting right to shelter changes to rally in Albany and NYC
Calls to protect New York City’s right to shelter will ring out in Albany and the city today. Members of the New York Shelter for All in Need Equally (NY SANE) Coalition will rally at the state Capitol and near City Hall this morning.
The coalition of religious leaders and social services advocacy groups was formed in October in opposition to Mayor Eric Adams’ attempts to roll back the city’s decades-old right to shelter mandate amid the continuing influx of asylum-seekers to the city. In the last month, the coalition has expanded its ranks to nearly 100 organizations and leaders, including new labor members like the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, and advocacy groups like the Riders Alliance, Make the Road NY, and Housing Justice For All.

Amplify Her Foundation announced that it will grant a combined total of $1 million to New York City nonprofits working to advance the leadership of women and girls across the boroughs. Amplify Her Foundation is a new private grantmaking foundation with the mission of supporting women and girls from underserved communities to become transformative changemakers. The announcement comes less than two months after the release of “If She Can Make it Here”, their comprehensive research report on women’s and girls’ leadership in New York City. Grantee partners were chosen out of a pool of almost 150 requests for support. Their work addresses a wide array of challenges facing women and girls in the city and fall into one or more of the following categories: girls’ leadership development; women’s leadership development; equitable representation; women’s entrepreneurship; and advocacy. The majority of the grantees are women-led, with diverse leadership reflective of the communities they serve, with many organizations specifically serving women of color, immigrants and other communities that face additional systemic barriers.
The Community Preservation Corporation, the nation’s largest community development financial institution dedicated solely to multifamily housing, announced that it has received a $15 million donation from “Yield Giving,” a fund led by MacKenzie Scott that delivers support to nonprofits around the world. The gift will allow the institution to further its nonprofit mission of financing affordable and workforce housing and expand the impact of programs and initiatives. Founded in 1974, the Community Preservation Corporation is a diversified, nonprofit, multifamily finance company that believes housing is central to transforming underserved neighborhoods into thriving and vibrant communities. Today, the Corporation uses its unique expertise in housing finance and public policy to expand access to affordable and workforce housing, while advancing diversity and equity within the development industry, and expanding investment in the green economy to lessen the impact of climate change.

The New York City comptroller, Brad Lander, has restricted Mayor Eric Adams’s ability to quickly spend hundreds of millions of dollars on the migrant crisis — a major blow to the mayor’s emergency powers (New York Times) … City jail officials opened a unit for people suspected of setting fires while detained on Rikers Island, but closed it the next day after a federal monitor found it unauthorized, lacking required fire prevention equipment. The misstep was revealed in a special report filed by federal monitor Steve Martin, whose team was charged with overseeing conditions at Rikers Island under a 2015 court agreement to reduce violence in the jails (Gothamist) … The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision began to expand the use of video visits at state lock-ups during the pandemic. Now, the Brooklyn Public Library has begun a program to make it even easier for people to connect online with loved ones behind bars (The City) … For migrant parents, navigating the city’s school bureaucracy has been a struggle. Parents and immigrant advocates complain of poor communication, delays enrolling students, long commutes, and other transportation-related issues. Those problems were the subject of a recent City Council oversight committee hearing along with a looming change: new 60-day limits on shelter stays for migrant families. The effects of the new policy are expected to affect an initial group of migrant families just after Christmas (Gothamist) … Several for-profit companies, including a medical firm facing scrutiny from authorities, are on track to get new city contracts worth more than $560 million to provide various services for migrants – as Mayor Adams faces calls to shift away from a for-profit procurement model amid the asylum seeker crisis (Daily News) … New York has received roughly $100 million for mental health services from the federal government under a landmark gun violence prevention bill passed last year, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand announced Monday (Gothamist)
