Opinion: State’s abortion access ecosystem pushed to limit two years after demise of Roe v. Wade
June 24 marked two years since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, eliminating the federal right to abortion across the country. This devastating news not only had an immediate harmful impact on pregnant people but initiated a ripple effect of grave challenges for reproductive health care at large. Abortion bans threaten the sustainability of health care providers and abortion access funds, even in states considered safe for abortion care, like New York. Two years after the end of Roe, it’s time to say the quiet part out loud: New York’s abortion access ecosystem is being pushed to the limit.

No Kid Hungry New York announced over $146,000 in grants to help eleven public school districts and community organizations in rural areas across upstate New York provide more kids with free, nutritious meals all summer long. The new funding takes aim at key barriers that have kept families from utilizing free summer meals in the past by providing grab-n-go meal options, home-delivery, expanding hours and opening new convenient locations.

City Council Member Francisco Moya is taking aim at the brothels fronting as massage parlors in his Queens district by proposing legislation giving the city new tools to intervene (Gothamist) … There has been a seventeen-fold increase in calls to 311 over the past five years about helicopter noise over neighborhoods, with the City Council now considering two bills aimed at tackling the increased aerial traffic by banning non-essential helicopter flights from city-operated helipads (Gothamist) … City Council Member Shaun Abreu, chair of the council’s Committee of Sanitation and Solid Waste Management, announced the restoration of funding – and additional cash – for litter-basket services and community composting programs that were facing deep mayoral budget cuts (amNY) … New York City’s new budget increases its support for the City University of New York system, or CUNY, by $77.6 million, from Mayor Eric Adams’ earlier proposal – helping to make up for $95 million in cumulative cuts in previous years of the Adams administration and bringing the city’s total support up to about $1.3 billion (THE CITY) … The cash-strapped New York City Housing Authority has begun to accelerate removal of tenants who have racked up significant rent arrears, evicting 62 households in the first quarter of 2024 (THE CITY)
