Opinion: Here’s how to get the state to actually work for the frontline feeding sector
It’s no secret that food insecurity was a significant issue during the pandemic, but what people may not know is that this need has skyrocketed in the last year. Multiple times over the last month, West Side Campaign Against Hunger’s customer distribution numbers have exceeded any day on record, dwarfing the food lines seen during the pandemic. With little public sector support, frontline providers must cover the gap.
When the emergency food sector needs more funding, we seek it from a variety of sources. Of course, our network of individual and foundation donors are amazing, but city, state, and federal governments also fund our work so we can provide high-quality food to an ever-increasing customer base. Unfortunately, the money given directly to frontline emergency food providers from the state is not rising enough to keep up with the need. Read more here. – Greg Silverman |

Today at noon, youth, parents, and advocates from across New York will hold the Healthy Minds, Healthy Kids Community Speakout virtual rally to call on elected leaders to address the state’s severe and worsening child mental health crisis. Hosted by a statewide coalition of children's behavioral health advocates and providers, the rally is expected to bring together more than 200 hundred families, youth, and advocates from communities across New York state, including Buffalo, Long Island, New York City and Rochester. New York’s youth are facing a devastating mental health crisis, with suicide being the second leading cause of death for New York kids 15 to 19, and half of New York youth facing major depressive episodes in the past year not receiving any treatment. The rally is hosted by the Campaign for Healthy Minds, Healthy Kids, Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York, Families Together in New York State, Long Island Families Together and the New York State Coalition for Children’s Behavioral Health.
