Living a testament to humane, criminal justice reform efforts With the advent of Black History Month, many observe this time by celebrating Black visionaries who endure as symbols of resilience and hope. While the work of many Black advocates remains unsung, one such barrier-breaker stands as a testament of the efficacy of humane, criminal justice reform efforts. As the new CEO of the Fortune Society, Stanley Richards, a formerly incarcerated man of color, brings 30 years of experience leading reintegration efforts across the city. Founded in 1967, the Fortune Society remains one of New York City’s most prominent organizations advocating for the humane reentry of formerly incarcerated individuals. Offering a holistic, “one-stop model” of treatment services, the organization has led the fight to close the Rikers Island jail complex. Among the Fortune Society’s leading legislative priorities, the Fair Chance for Housing Act, which went into law this January, stands as a milestone for combating housing discrimination experienced by formerly incarcerated individuals. The bill makes it unlawful for most of the city’s housing providers to conduct “unfettered criminal background checks, prohibiting consideration of convictions past certain time periods.” In doing so, the bill aims to end cycles of homelessness and instability faced by justice-involved individuals, who struggle with a host of barriers preventing reintegration. JBI, a nonprofit serving individuals who are blind, have visual impairments, or print disabilities, announced they will be expanding their services to create custom accessible materials in braille, audio, and large print formats to all NYC-based nonprofits—in most case free of charge—thanks to a $200,000, two-year grant from The New York Community Trust (NYCT). Founded as the Jewish Braille Institute in 1931, JBI will lend its long history of expertise to support social service and cultural institutions across NYC striving to enhance inclusion and foster equal access for all New Yorkers. JBI’s grant was announced as part of $7.5 million in NYCT Awards to 40 nonprofits working to advance economic and educational opportunities for New Yorkers and improve lives throughout the city and beyond. JBI plans to use the NYCT grant to provide access to crucial information for individuals who are blind or visually impaired, including: transformation of informational materials, where JBI will assist New York City nonprofits in transforming their print materials into braille, audio, and large print formats; and free services, where JBI will offer its services at no cost to NYC nonprofit organizations, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder progress toward a more inclusive and accessible society. JBI is now available to consult with NYC nonprofit organizations looking to increase accessibility in their communities. The Center of Hope International and NYC Kids RISE announced that the Concert for College 2024 has raised more than $200,000 for students across nine elementary schools in Queens. Grammy-award winning gospel artist Bishop Hezekiah Walker and the Love Fellowship Tabernacle Choir headlined the concert at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center at LaGuardia Community College. All proceeds will go to the NYC Scholarship Accounts of students at P.S. 17, P.S. 76, P.S. 111, P.S. 112, P.S. 151, P.S. 171, Growing Up Green Charter School, Our World Neighborhood Charter School, and VOICE Charter School through the NYC Kids RISE Save for College Program, a community tool New Yorkers can use to build wealth in their neighborhoods and support the college and career dreams of their children. Community Scholarships, a central element of the NYC Kids RISE Save for College Program, are a way for local organizations, businesses, houses of worship, neighbors, and other New Yorkers, institutions and systems to raise and direct money to students’ future college and career training. Partners and sponsors of the Concert for College 2024 include Wells Fargo, the Gray Foundation, Rise Light & Power, M&T Bank, The Center of Hope International, NYC Kids RISE and more. |
