Director of Institutional Giving

New Alternatives for Children, Inc. (NAC) is an award-winning not-for-profit child welfare agency in Midtown Manhattan, with a satellite Bronx office, dedicated to serving children and families with medical complexity, chronic health conditions, significant disabilities and behavioral challenges. To assist in achieving this mission, NAC is currently seeking a Director of Institutional Giving to lead its Institutional Giving group in the Development Department.

DESCRIPTION OF DEPARTMENT:

To assist in achieving this mission, NAC is currently seeking an innovative and experiencedDirector of Institutional Giving to join its development team. This individual will be a key player in advancing NAC’s ambitious funding goals. The development team raises approximately $10mm annually through a combination of private and government grants, individual giving, and a NYC based gala. The team prides itself in having a deep understanding of, and passion for NAC’s mission, and is excited to welcome the right person into this position.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Director of Institutional Giving will develop, execute, and oversee a program of institutional giving to ensure the agency has the resources it needs to deliver the gold-standard services for which New Alternatives for Children (NAC) is known. The primary responsibility of the Director of Institutional Giving is to develop the institutional giving strategy for the agency and oversee grant writing to create compelling, outcomes-driven letters of inquiry, proposals, reports, and other correspondence for current and prospective foundation and government funders. They will work collaboratively with the Development Director, the Executive Director, Chief Operating Officer, NAC’s Board of Trusteesand key Program Directorsto create a coherent strategy for increased and sustainable fundingwhile continuing to maintain a strong alignment between existing funding streams and NAC programs. The Director will also supervise and mentor a Senior Manager of Institutional Giving and a Grant Writer.This key position reports to the Executive Director. NACoperates on a hybrid work schedule, with a minimum of 3 days per week on-site. Additional time on-site may be required.

Manage a portfolio of $3mm+ by developing and writing proposals to foundations and government funders. Work closely with program and fiscal teams to generate narrative content and project budgets. Plan, schedule, assign and execute all proposal, applicationand reporting work. Review and edit drafts and provide mentorship to junior team members. Track due dates of all reports and renewal applications. Monitor compliance with grant deliverables and outcomes. Ensure that all institutional donations are properly tracked and that all donors are appropriately thanked and acknowledged in agency publications and social media.

Identify and pursue appropriate institutional funding opportunities to increase revenue and meet program needs. Review government and foundation requests for proposals. Conduct in-depth research to identify prospects for new foundation proposals. Work with the Board of Trustees to identify and leverage foundation contacts. Arrange and participate in all meetings with institutional giving funders. Build strong partnerships with new foundations and government sources.

Work with the Director of Development and Executive Director to plan development strategies to meet agency needs. Build a comprehensive annual institutional giving plan for NAC. Formulate annual projections for institutional giving income.Work with Executive Staff and Program Directors to develop plans and proposals for new initiatives.

Collaborate with other development department staff in preparation of agency publications or promotional materials. Oversee invitation of institutional giving partners to agency events.

Actively participate in agency-wide strategic planning. Work to grow NAC’s status as a significant thought leader and expert in the field by partnering with research organizations to conduct studies.

Required Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
• Requires a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in institutional giving, preferably at a social services agency.

Required Skills:

• Successful track record obtaining six and seven figure grant awards.
• Superior leadership, organizational and writing skills.
• Experience and ability working with budgets and program outcome data.
• Discretion and judgment in presenting program content and outcomes.
• Supervisory experience strongly preferred.
• Excellent computer literacy including with Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
• Experience using Raiser’s Edge preferred.
• Must possess excellent verbal communication skills and have ability to speak/collaborate frequently with foundation representatives, board members and program staff.
• Creative and strategic thinking a must.
