Full Job Description

We are seeking individuals that have a wealth of knowledge, experience, and the ability to manage a high volume of New York State-based Workers' Compensation claims.

This position is hybrid (or fully remote, dependent upon the employee’s location/distance from the physical office).

Our organization is incredibly unique. The Black Car Fund is a not-for-profit organization that provides full workers’ compensation insurance, safety education, and health and wellness benefits to ground transportation drivers who operate in the state of New York, and who are affiliated with The Fund’s Member Bases.

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job or be learned within a reasonable amount of time to successfully perform the assigned duties.

COMMON EXPECTATIONS

Knowledge of: Relevant New York State and local laws and regulations governing workers’ compensation. Medical and technical terminology used in injury cases. Methods and techniques of data collection, research, and analysis. Basic principles and procedures of report preparation for settlements, analytical, statistical, and financial report preparation. Basic principles of business letter writing, record keeping, and records management. Basic principles and procedures of financial record keeping and reporting as it relates to claims management. Modern office procedures and methods including computer equipment and supporting applications. English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Ability to: Conduct research and analyze information. Identify issues and process claims in a timely fashion within the timeframes prescribed by law and The Fund. Gather, organize, compile, and summarize data. Create and maintain a variety of records, logs, and reports, as needed. Promptly respond to requests and inquiries. Operate office equipment including computers and supporting software. Adapt to changing technologies and learn the functionality of new equipment and systems, as needed. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those related to the normal course of work.

COMMON RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Complete 3-point contacts in a professional and timely manner.
  • Determine compensability within the period required by New York State and establish reserves based on company guidelines
  • Adjust medical bills and indemnity payments efficiently
  • Correspond with interested parties in a professional and timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, whether verbal or written, as well as coding, within our claims system
  • Provide court testimony as necessary, and negotiate Schedule Loss of Use (SLU) and Section 32 (final settlement) payments in a professional and timely manner.
  • Report claims to the excess carrier; respond to requests in a professional and timely manner.
  • Communicate claim activity and processing with the claimant and all other interested parties and maintain professional claimant relationships.
  • Refer cases as appropriate to Claims Supervisor/Management

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Maintain a healthy/positive working relationship with supervision, management, a diverse organizational team environment, and clientele
  • Participate in company-provided training and events

Cognitive:

  • Clear and conceptual thinking ability; excellent judgment, troubleshooting, problem-solving, analysis, and discretion; ability to handle work-related stress; ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously; ability to communicate matters of concern effectively; and meet deadlines

Physical:

  • Computer, keyboarding, managing electronic files

QUALIFICATIONS/PREFERENCES

  • Extensive experience in New York State workers' compensation claims adjusting is required
  • New York State adjusting license is preferred but not required
  • A college degree is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of DXC's Assure Claims (formerly known as Riskmaster) is a plus.
  • References are required.

  • Must be fully COVID-19 vaccinated
  • Mask-wearing in the office may be required in certain circumstances
  • Health and Wellness screening form must be completed daily when scheduled to work in the office.

COVID-19 considerations:
All BCF staff must be vaccinated, and health and wellness forms are required to ensure that if anyone is ill and contagious, regardless of the illness, we'd like staff to not work in the office if scheduled. Mask-wearing may be required in some circumstances.
